The aim of the present paper is twofold. First, it attempts to give a descriptive list of Arabic assertive verbs A J " so as to show how the set of assertive illocutionary forces is lexicalized in the Arabic vocabulary. Second, it tries to show the relations of comparative strength between the Arabic assertive illocutionary forces.correctly ordered so as to predict the actual illocutionary entailments between assertive speech act verbs.
