ALLEGORICAL ELEMENTS IN GREAT EXPECTATIONS
Abstract
Great Expectations has received much critical attention which cen- ters around two aspects: First, the qualities of its structure and techni- que; and Second, the depth of its moral penetration.Susan Horton, provi- des a very helpful approach to the range and variety of style in Dickens, writings with enlightening impli ations for ihe style of Great Expecta- tions. (1) In 7he Moral Art of Dickens, Br bara Hardy focuses on Dick- ens' moral issues (2). There has been some doubt about whether Great Expectations is, in one way or another, an allegory or not. However, it can be stated that the novet is not a fully developed allegory, but it conta- ins some allegorical elements.It is not too difficult to find sufficient evi- dence.This will be the task of the paper.
