Abstract

The concept of culture is notoriously' obtuse 'in its protean meanings: That it could refer to a "whole way of life, m terial, intellectual, and spiritual" see.ns to raise more questions than aas veriag tham (1). When anthropokogists discuss "culture", they priniarily associate it with modes of economic production, patterns of behavior, authority, religious prac tices, hierarchy of social, marital, tribat power, lc. (2) When the same: concept is discussed by students of literature, they tend to discuss it in terms of those aspects which alienate a character from others and from himself such as color, dust, heat, or Scx. Inother words: , the concept of culture assumes in literature significances and. frames. of refeience.: not:, ordinarily discussed by anthropologists.
